Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

I hear you.

You know, a couple of birds I was really impressed with, weight wise, were the Jersey Giants and the Turkens (Naked Neck). I know the Turkens are crazy to look at, but I had a roo that was 5lbs dressed out at 6 months. That's really the dilema... the cornish grow so fast, unlike other chickens, but to get the higher egg production you have to settle for a smaller bird.

(I had a JGxNN roo that was HUGE! The cross was kind of cool looking, too. LBxNN was cool, too. Pretty tasty, too...

I'm not sure either of us, let alon all our neighbors, could handle the Turkens around here.
They give me the willies

Maybe one of the families up here has nice enough CMs that I could buy chicks off of.................

I know... I didn't like the idea of NNs, either, but they kinda grow on you. Like a fungus.

I am very linear in my very being, much to the amusment of my DH. Though I do have a great sense of humor!
NNs will never grow on me

No, I don't, but I wish I did. There might be some in the Valley, though. Rebecca has talked about them... not sure if Terrisa has any...
Someone had gifted me eggs in '08, and 18 days into it said "Oh, btw, there might be NNs in there."

First one to hatch was a NNxJG cross... GORGEOUS black rooster. He lived long enough to father some LB crosses, but they all turned out to be roosters and I already had too many, so they went to Camp Kenmore. Dammit (that was his name, because that's the first word Jeremy said when I told him) was a big boy.

Great name!
I think Triple D hatchery is going to have them, but I didn't want to go there for one, except as a last resort. They may be reliable, I don't know. They were an endangered breed I read, so I kindof wanted to keep a couple.
I am going to take Tweener ( the second dellie rooster from your chicks) over to the neighbors for their flock rooster. Those two guys are the nicest roosters you can imagine. I was told that Tweener could go but "T Rex stays with us forever!"

Awesome! Spread the love! LOL! I've only had one Dellie rooster go rogue on me, but I nipped him in the bud quick and replaced him. I refuse to breed aggressive roosters.
...and I will only say that I will not purchase from Triple-D again.

Thanks. You have resolved any doubts I had about going there. One never knows.
The neighbor's flock is getting to be a few years old and they have no rooster. They hoped to get some chicks this spring. Need a fellow for that, but they wanted a nice one! They have two little girls.

My gripe with the valley hatchery, is that they claim to have pastured, grass fed turkey for Thanksgiving.
But if you go there, you can see them eating grain, in a shelter
sad.png

I think the only thing we will use them for, is a few Xs each year, to give us some poultry for the freezer that we can haul out for company.
I am more averse to ordering out of state.
But, you use who you got to use at various times!

You're right. It ends up being a last resort thing to me. And as you say it's a lot closer than the lower 48. I bought a turkey from them once, and it was good, not great. (But then I was used to the wild turkey crosses a neighbor raised a few years ago.)
