Just FYI, we will be hatching Bourbon Red Turkeys this year, and I hope to have access to pure Blue Slate eggs, when they start laying in earnest. We didn't get to eat any of our own turkeys, but had rave reviews about the Bourbons. I'm just saying...

I have to convince dh for sure. Maybe next year.
I cannot eat commercial turkey, because I have Celiacs. The junk they inject into the meat has gluten in it, regardless if they list it or not.
For that matter, I try not to eat commcerial anything, but, I really miss getting things like turkey legs at the fair

I'll remember that. My only problem is, once they've been with us for a while (2 days?

) NO ONE is going to take them out. I know - this makes no sense, we hunt for our meat, but there you go....the birds acquire "buddy" status. My neighbor usually raises a few extra and we have gotten them from him butchered when available, and he gets my old hens if we can part with them.

Paula and Tori, I think Margie is getting more "Freedom rangers"? I think that's what she called them?

We raised NH's and BR's last year for meat and were not impressed at all. We ended up with a tall lanky bird with hardly
any meat on them and they said that they were dual purpose. I guess we are headed for the cornish cross thing
this year. I hated waiting to grow out those guys we had last year. It was nice the year before with the cornish, they grow fast and we
arent butchering all summer. One day and we are done....

Well, for those who do not want to get "attached" to your food, we will be offering processed turkeys if purchased in advance.

I haven't figured pricing yet, but we have the ability to process them for fresh or frozen pickup. We joke about being on a first-name basis with our food.

Count me in then.... We are such wusses! LOL

Will someone please PM me and tell me the pros and cons of the valley hatchery? I don't know a thing about them. Also, why does there seem to be such a strong preference not to order outside birds. I'm lobbying for a pair of turkeys. DH is afraid I'll get too attached and they become permanent.

Hey I know what he's worried about! There's only so many pet birds I can accommodate.

All I know about the Valley Hatchery is what I said. I think some of the other folks have had more experience with them.

I had to show off my chicks. I had 4 hatch out of the blue eggs. 2 are yellowish and 2 are brownish. Do you think the color could be sex linked? I can't be sure of the daddy but mom is a rumpless araucana and she is now penned with a rumpless araucana roo. I know they aren't show quality but I love the colored eggs.
