I grew up around chickens in Texas, but I haven’t tried keeping a flock in Alaska yet. I live on 5 acres in the woods in an off-grid log cabin. I’ve raised goats, geese, and sheep here, so I know there are many challenges keeping livestock in our climate. I want to learn all I can from those who have cold climate experience before making a decision.

Welcome to BYC! We definitely have some cold climate members who can give you all the info you're looking for, I am not one of them though. My problem is the opposite, I live in a desert and the heat tries to cook us all alive 4-5 months out of the year.

Hi! I think if you pick cold-hardy breeds, your chickens will be just as happy in Alaska as your goats, geese and sheep! Good link to find the AK State Thread (and any others that you are looking for) from @GodLovesU.

We'd love to see pictures of your current animals (if you have any)! (I'm obviously a sheep fan (and goats)).:)

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!

Greetings & Salutations. Welcome.

I'm thinking the laying may be off during the winter/dark months. Others in your state, can let you know if they add supplemental lighting for a couple of those months.

This is a wonderful site on which to Learn and enjoy. We are pleased to have you in the community.

All my animals have grown up and crossed over. I don’t have any on my property now except the many wild things. 😄
