Hello,
I have the opportunity to get some inexpensive alder wood shavings. Is alder wood safe for the hen boxes? What about the brooder...providing the shavings are not small pieces that can be eaten?
I have heard a rumbling that straw can carry mites. Anyone have any experience with mites in the straw. I haven't had any trouble so far with the straw.
Thanks for your help!
Roxie

I'm pretty sure alder is safe, it's cedar you want to avoid. I've never had mites in straw either, but prefer not to use it anyway. In my opinion wood shavings control odor and wetness better than hay or straw.
