I bought a bale of alfalfa wanted to use it as mulch in my veggie garden. I live in zone 10 so its very hot here and need to keep the garden soil mulched at all times. I have tried straw but read that alfalfa has more nutrients for the soil. Should i let the chickens pick through the bale first to remove any seeds that it may have? Maybe adding a bit every week as to not over feed them? Or is alfalfa as mulch a bad idea? I have used alfalfa meal in the garden before and veggies did really good last fall.
