Alfalfa Cubes for Chickens? UPDATE

Living in southern California, I'm spoiled - plenty of greens here in December. My winter veggies are all the rage with my girls. They actually watch me pull a bok choy or swiss chard leaf off one of my plants and go nuts until I bring it over to them. Then they promptly wipe it out. But I'm a little greedy about my veggies, so maybe I'll give this alfalfa suggestion a try. Thanks!

CRAP, I had a feed issue last week and had to buy alfalf pellet and delta brome cubes to feed my rabbits... well..... I had like a whole bag of each left and just YESTERDAY gave the bag to my goat friend for her girls..... I never even thought to give it to the chickens!!!!! BLAH!!!!!

You can feed them alfalfa pellets, though I believe that everyone's feedstores version of pellets differs. A few years ago the pellets I got were a few inches long. Now this year, they are much smaller, slightly bigger than the hens layers pellets that I can get.

Anyway, I rehydrate the pellets in warm water and they love it. It grows three times the size that they started at.

Alfalfa is good for your birds in winter not just for egg yolk color, it is considered a hot food and will keep them warmer in cold weather.

I have never tried alfalfa cubes or pellets. I give my birds baled alfalfa and they love to scratch and peck in it. Before you know it only the stems are left and when the field get plowed the stems get plowed into the ground.

My EE, production red, BR and Brown leghorn all peck at a bale of Alfalfa in the coop/run. They do eat their starter food too and the salad greens left over from the kitchen. They are 9 weeks old. This is my first experience with chickens.

They also get occasional oatmeal and yogurt.

:jumpy.

Going straight away tomorrow morning for the alfalfa
pellets. I am running out of greens .But the parsley is still gowing strong.and they do love it .

I dry my swiss chard & kohlorabi leaves from my organic garden to add them to my pastas and to the dog food I make for two of my dogs. I decided to crush these and added them to their food. They loved it.

I'll definitely be drying more of these next year for the. The kohlorabi leaves taste like cabbage, since it is related to the cabbage. I'll have to try the stevia that I grow. I bet they'll love that too! Hmm, I hadn't thought of feeding them that until I was typing this post.

I feed my girls dehydrated alfalfa. Comes in a plastic bag that holds the compressed alfalfa. I feed a hand full in a container...they love it.
