may be but it works had a old man tell me that back in the 60s and I found it works thur the years when the weather gets cold
 
As long as it is Alfalfa Pellets and not Rabbit Pellets you will be fine, but if it is Rabbit Pellets then you would be best off not feeding it to them.
Rabbit Pellets tend to be high in salt which is not good for chickens and can cause problems if feed to much.

alfalfa cubes work great..my chickens love it.We add just enough water to be able to break them up not soaked though or they wait until it dries out some to eat it.My scratch feed has alfalfa pellets in it as well and they gobble them up with all the other goodies in there.
