algae in goat's water

We have a black water trough similar to this

about 40-50 gallons. I"m having a problem with algae growing in it. I head about adding apple cider vinegar or pennies. Any idea which one works, and the recommended parts per gallon?

ACV will inhibit algae growth but I don't know a lot about goats - are they particular about their water? I had considered adding it to our horse water trough but horses can be funny about drinking water that tastes different and I didn't want to put them off.

For my chickens I usually do a couple of tablespoons per gallon, if that gives you an idea of the ratio to multiply for the larger trough.

I might try it and see how it works out. I posted on BYH, but everyone seems to think that I should just use 5 gallon buckets and empty them 2x a day. I spent 2 years and over $200 trying out different bucket sizes, heights and so on. Ive got 2 boers and a pygmy, so the boers would knock them over if they were too low, and the pygmy could not reach them unless they were on the ground. I tried this trough and it has worked the best because it is heavy enough that the goats can't knock it over, but it can put on the ground for the pygmy to reach.
