I have a bucket feeder with nipples on the bottom. I opened it for the first time in a year and found that there's a lot of green algae. In looking for something to prevent that I saw one post in another forum that suggested that I should add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar per gallon of water as both an algicide and an immune system booster. Thoughts?

Is all I use, I use buckets as waterers though. I will bleach them from time to time and let air dry in the sun when and if I can. Hardly ever do i find anything funky in there. Besides most of the time they'd rather drink from the nastiest, muckiest, mold and god knows what infested puddle they can find. I just can't bring myself to bring them that kind of water.....

I use plain water in my bucket with horizontal nipples. I rinse it out once in a while when needed, but mostly just refill it. Maybe you could take the lid off a few times a year, instead of once a year and just hose it out.
