Hey guys long time reader of some threads posted after I went looking for answers to some questions !
Finally decided to join in hopes of becoming more knowledgeable and share my experiences .
I work for a wildlife rehaber who cares for mallards….
She’s great but a little outdated and we have bud heads a lot …..
Well first question I have is since all she feeds them is grain and romaine lettuce what is something we can add to their diet that isn’t too costly in order to help them grow better ?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Grain and Lettuce is definitely lacking in the vitamins and nutrients Ducks need. You might start a thread in our Ducks forum for more indepth information on feed for Ducks... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/ducks.42/

Howdy and welcome on in!

Sounds like you’ve got some real hands-on experience, which is always worth sharing.

As for the mallard youngsters - romaine and grain is a good start, but you’re right to look for more. A good cost-effective boost would be some high-protein waterfowl starter or non-medicated chick crumble, if you can get it. You can also toss in hard-boiled eggs mashed up real fine, oats, a little cooked rice, and even peas and corn for variety.

If bugs are around, tossin them some mealworms or black soldier fly larvae (my favorite) now and then is a great natural protein source.

And bless you for helpin’ those wild babies get a better start!

(Correction: black soldier fly larvae are not MY personal favorite. But for fowl I have, a favorite for them).
