All about raising chicks and chickens! Also ask questions!

Question plz, I have a hen one year old who is broody and that's great. She's been broody for about two wks and I wasn't aware so when I got it I went and got 12 eggs from friend she is setting them question is will she stay broody til the hatch or will she abandon the eggs in about a week when nothing hatched? I want babies.

No, if a hen is broody she will hatch the eggs!
Make sure you keep lots of water and feed near by! Putting up curtains encourages a broody hen to hatch eggs, because she feels like she has privacy.
GOOD LUCK HATCHING!

I have a coop question!

Will a 33"L x 20"D x 24"H Dog house with a massive run(unsure how big), Three to four hours of free-range each to every few days, With mixed sizes fit 8-11 chickens?

The dog house might work for 1 or 2 birds if they have to spend any amount of time inside it. Just how big is a massive run? it could be 10 x 10 or 100 x 100 it depends on the persons perspective of massive.

Okay, I'm going to respond to this last one and then I'm going to back out before I overstay my welcome.

She may well set on them for another 2 weeks + while the new eggs hatch. But she will most likely lose condition, become weak, and not be able to do an effective job raising them. That's not always the case, of course. Some of them will sit tight for as long as it takes. But you're asking this little hen to sit on eggs for 5 weeks, and that's a lot to ask.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to just back on out of this thread because I feel like I'm doing the hosts a disservice by second guessing their answers.

Okay, so I am very new to this. I have never hatched any eggs with broody hen nor an incubator. So I have a question. What happens to the eggs at that point? Do you just hope another hen will pick up where the one leaves off? Or do you put them in an incubator?

Or were you saying that this one will not finish the job because she had already been broody for 2 weeks before she had eggs to sit on? Just trying to learn as much as possible from those who know before I am faced with broody hens and hatching eggs!

A broody hen WILL hatch her egg, but she might abandon the chick when it's hatched.

so a simple google search for "broody abandons eggs"and pick a random 10 articles that pop up in the search to read.
You will see this is more common that you know.
The do sometimes leave their eggs and NOT go back to hatch them.

I'm sure she will hatch the eggs! But In case she abandons them if you have a incubator you could put them in there to hatch the rest of the way.
