All chickens are dead

Lanissa,
You know what is right for YOUR dog, and you do what your heart tells you, not anyone elses. I had to have our boxer put down two years ago, her spleen bursted because she had a tumour on it. It was not an easy decision, but I KNOW it was the best one. The vet who came to the house to put her down said she would have gone on very sick like that for a long time, simply because she was happy and her heart was strong enough to keep her going. But he also agreed that it wasn't the best thing for her. We were ready, and she was tired. She is buried in our yard under a hydrangia bush.

Sorry about your Dog. Our vet told us a year ago she was badly anemic and told is of a diet for her arthritis and he evaluated the one tumor she had then and said it caused little discomfort...but now a year later she developed more tumors and the arthritis has gotten worse. I talked to the vet today and he knows my dog pretty good (16 years of the same vet). He thinks its best as well. He was surprised as well when I told him the chicken incident, he could not believe it! My old girl getting that jolt of energy from where?

I plan on bringing her back home when the procedure is done and I will bury her under her favorite crate myrtle tree...

Have you given any thought to the idea that the last sudden jolt of energy may have been that 'last good day' that God gives to those who are about to pass on. You know what I mean? I just wonder if maybe...

I understand how it feels to put a beloved pet down. I had to do it recently. Three days before she had what would be described as a burst of energy as she was found trolling out by the highway, which she hadn't done in many years due to advancement in age. We couldn't believe she was out there and was wondering what was up. After her stroll from then on she went down hill and after 3 days passed I had to make the decision. It was one of the hardest things to do and I miss her so much

After her passing we decided no more outside dogs because we live by a highway and did not want to take a chance of one being hit by a car and I already have 2 in the house so........I got chickens

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry Lannissa.
What you and your survivor must have witnessed would have been horrible.
Please know that my thoughts are with you.
This is all very, very difficult.

I am sorry for your feathered loss, and for the soon loss of you pet. I agree that you know what is best for your pets. It's so hard to say goodbye.

I had to put a boxer down two years ago on my birthday and it broke my heart. It was the hardest thing I have ever in my life had to do because my dogs are like my children.

As for having dogs around chickens, I'd say take proper precautions but there is no reason why the two can't reside on the same farm or in the same yard. If you have a dog that you suspect will be troublesome, extend extra caution. Assume that any dog will consider a chicken an "easy meal". Doesn't make the dog the villain, a dog's just doing what a dog will do.

My best to Booger. I hope his mental health continues to be restored.

Just letting everyone know that Booger is too his Happy old self, and has FULL RUN of the house during the Day! Its driving the family crazy,

His Bachelor pad is almost complete as well...how does 8'X5' and 7Ft tall sound for one small leghorn? LOL. And he will have nesting boxes! LOL, though I know he won't be needing them. My mom wants me to get some Barred Rocks now since my great grandparents used to raise them, so I guess those will be the next girls I get. As for my Dog, well, we gave her another week as well too love on her more so she forgets the whole incident. I would hate to put her down knowing we were all sore with what she did, but I know it still needs to be done, she really is miserable, poor old girl. Thanks for all the hugs and understanding, you guys are all the greatest!!

Im so sorry for your loss. I went through this twice in the last couple of months. I gave the dog to my sister where he is in the country and has room to roam and no chickens to kill!! I did love the dog and probably would have changed my mind if I didnt jump to giving him away. I dont know how I would have kept him out of my chicken coop though!! He is happy and we have more chickens. We had one left also and he is doing good. He was lonely until the new ones came in the mail but he just followed us around. He has too much company now as I over did it!! Oh well I will downsize when I know who are roosters!! Good luck with the coop and future chickens.
