Personally I think as long as the thread is properly named and described in the title, threads including meat issues are easy to avoid. I am not offended by such threads but there are threads that I dont open because I know it will upset me. However, with all that being said I do think that we all need to try to put threads in the proper places. Just my thoughts.

good question...

I thought so too, because if you are NOT feeding either of those a balanced diet including meat, then I consider that abuse.

Ditto..

Wolfwoman: that is a good question, and this is a dilemma for me. All my dogs are rescue dogs, and they had no other place to go. One was rescued from an abusive family, on is about 17 and his owner abandoned him, and my other has recently passed away

I am providing them with a home where they can live out there lives happily and safely. Also, I feed them natural, organic, free range dog food and I do a lot of research and talking to workers of dog food companies to find out where they get their meat and how the animals are treated. I also make my own vegetarian dog food sometimes that provides a balanced diet for them.
I am not sure if my ramble answers your question though. I feel comfortable with my dogs eating meat because this is something they need to eat, it is their natural diet that they would have a hard time health wise surviving without. In modern times, I believe that humans could easily find meat alternatives and it is not vital to health and nutrition. I also do not see it as black and white, and the world will do what the world will do. I am trying to do my best to reduce suffering and cruelty, and sometimes my methods (like having dogs) conflict with this.
Your question has me really thinking about this and will make me think a lot about getting another dog in the coming years after mine have passed.

When I worked in the vet industry we used to see very ill animals, cats especially, that people were trying to keep on vegan diets.

I am NOT a vegan. I have pet ducks and occasionally meat ducks. Last weekend one of my pets became stew after she broke an egg internally and was starting to suffer. I would not leave her to suffer and I don't waste meat.

If I run into a thread I don't care for, like duck diapers

Ok, good for you for rescuing dogs, and good for you for considering not having any more - THAT makes sense...being a vegetarian (to me) doesn't.

Now, (and I don't want this taken the wrong way and I hope you don't) we are ALSO predators, we are supposed to eat meat to have a balance diet. Because we have been processed and pasteurized to DEATH the meat that we get at the grocery store (along with the veggies) are crap. This is the reason so many of us are ill, NOT because we eat meat. Protein in many forms is essential to a healthy life.

That being said, there will always be suffering and cruelty as long as there is LIFE, and it isn't always at the hands of humans... (as I said, please take this in the right light)... just for an example, have you ever seen a wolf disembowel it's prey and eat it while it's still bawling? They do. Have you ever seen a cat play with a mouse? They do. Or a chicken peck a shrew to death before eating it? They do. None of that is pretty - in fact, nature is a HECK of a lot more cruel than me raising my chickens, feeding them treats, talking to them and then butchering them. My death is quick and as painless as I can possibly make it.

I hunt and I fish. I shoot and eat rabbit, grouse, ptarmigan, caribou, bear and moose. I am a predator. All humans are, to deny that, is to deny your existence.

Remember, your chickens are meat eaters too!

Thanks everyone! Lets keep this thread going if possible, obviously this is a very controversial issue and I am glad we can discuss it civilly, I have seen some topics get really nasty.
Also, I mentioned before that I can't function technologies (it took me about 2 hours and lots of help to figure out how to post pictures on here. . .), and I have failed to find that spiffy little x button that olive hill mentioned. . .help?

Hit that, or, the back arrow

We all have filters, and we must use them appropriately.

I want to thank you for not requiring your pets to eat the same way you are.
Animals are unable to verablize to us when they are not feeling quite right, and when it does become apparent, the issue has gotten pretty bad.
