Eww.. reminds me of the time my son found a mess of grubs (the big, fat, white kind) under a stump in my yard. He fed them to the chicks, and the popping noises they made as they crunched them.. ewwwww. But they were in hog-heaven!

Should you let the chickens just muck around in the maggot cr@p, or wash the fly-grubs off first? I mean, the last time I looked in a rank and fetid trashbin, well, it wasnt some place I'd want my little friends slogging around in.

I think I am too, although I'm going to have to figure out how I'm going to hang them. Knowing how things work around my place, the turkeys will think it's just another place to roost.

For me, I'm looking at it more like a treat rather than a main part of their food; so, I won't be putting that much veggie matter in my bucket. They don't need to hop into the bucket, the maggots apparently crawl out when they're ready to be eaten! Whoda thunk maggots were that smart!

Elderoo, surely you have seen chickens in a compost pile? The things they eat make me shiver. They think they are dining high on the hog. I wouldn't worry about washing some maggots off from the trash juice. Ack!

Blisschick, make sure the bucket has a handle. When you hang it by the handle hang it so it will tip and swing if they put their big turkey butts on it. Once they get dumped a few times they won't try to roost on it again.

When I looked in the barrel, it was MOVING! The turkeys were eating the maggots as they came out the holes, and were getting the black sludge on them from sticking their heads under the bottom edge of the barrel, where they'd made a hole in the dirt eating them.

Remember this when you go to kiss them goodnight.
