All my chickens in a row

I have 2 flocks of chickens. One with 5 layers and one with 2 precious girls that live nearby... By nearby I mean on top of my caravan or in the tree right next to it. I love them more than any girlfriend. I call them my "poop filter"... Anyone doesn't like them, then they can leave! My hens are red shavers except for two other layers. Unlike any you have met before. They are known as the the commercial chicken but these two in particular are something unique... But maybe not so much to the community here.
I don't name my chickens.
My favourite comes with me on my lap in the car most short trips and gives me an egg every day. Currently I'm getting 100% from my 7. I feed them choock chow, outdated dry dog and cat food from a friend who works there, whole maize, and heaps of fresh greens and grit in the form of crushed egg shells.
They are also never locked up. All are as free as can be.

They are a great addition to the business here at our land, the pet cemetery. We have 1500 pets buried on 10 acres of park grounds.

Getting chickens was the best thing I ever did in my life. I missed my life up a lot in the early days with drug addiction and tried many things to clean up my act. It seems I am sticking with the chickens, 16 months free of methamphetamine thanks to my darlings in my eyes.

Oh they Love noodles. Man do they love noodles.

I have an area of my vege garden dedicated to greens for the chickens.

I have 6 black leghorn and 2 australorp in the incubator to increase my eggs. They are on day 13 of incubation. I find its one of those things that you follow directions as much as possible then cross your fingers.

At the end of they day, a chicken mother knows best about incubation.

If anyone wants to talk chickens. I am here. I'm surprised how much I have learnedbut there is a wealth of knowledge I dont have yet.

I am born in Russia and live in New Zealand.

Hello and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. It's great to hear that your flock has helped with more than eggs.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 (there's a guide on how to include your location under your avatar - including your location is very helpful). You can use this link to contact try and find members in your area - Where am I? Where are you!

Best wishes

Welcome! You're right, this place is a wealth of information. Have a question? Just ask and a whole lot of helpful people will be happy to help you out.

Love your descriptions... Are you so lucky that you get to live on Pet Cemetery grounds (please tell me you're a fan of the original Stephen King book/movie)?

Looking forward to hearing more about the adventures of your "$hit filters".

I missed it the first time, but I saw a few things that you might need to be aware of.
Oyster shells and egg shells are not grit. They are great sources of calcium, but grit is just rock. Pebbles/sand. They are probably getting enough of it while packing around in the grass.
There is nothing wrong with dog and cat food, but the high protein can cause issues if they get too much. Again, it doesn’t seem that is a problem since they spend so much time roaming, and filling up on bugs.
