All Set for January 4th (Its over...)

I really am hoping for the best and a nest full of surprises in the morning! I did pick up mama to check today and yesterday. I also went out and got to peek when I fed everyone because she got off on her own. Now, yesterday when she got off to eat I picked up a silkie egg (The shells feel like thin glass at this point!) and I listened to the inside and I heard a tapping sound. So it was alive yesterday for sure inside there!

I'm hoping isn't just slowed development like in a bator when you have some low temp snaps toward the end.

I'm going to be tossing and turning all NIGHT!

I wish my silkie would let me pick her up and check! Every time I even put my hand in the cage she attacks me! It's awful. I can hear cheeping tonight from under her, within the eggs, but I can't look

Good luck with your hatch!

The funny part is I have 2 black hens named Fillet and Peck. When I first got them... MEAN! Would race at me and attack like a rooster, they were nasty. They were 24 weeks old and had never been handled. I went out everyday and held them one at a time for an hour and pet them, and gave them treats. I had them broken in about 3 weeks.

Now they see me and they let me pet them, pick them up, and make a cooing purring sound the whole time. Total trust!

Ok, I am literally heading out the door NOW to go check on the coop... I had a mess from the dog this morning that made it impossible for me to do anything but take care of the kid, the dog and the cat all morning!!!! Grrr

OMG... ok, she's quit sitting on them! I saw her out in the run around breakfast, she was still out there when I went and they started getting cool. I finally scooped them up and I now have them in the bathroom under a lamp with warm water under them, but not on them. I have a thermometer on them right now trying to get them as close to 100 as possible. I think I lost one for sure the others I'm not so sure will make it either. I need to give them at least 24 hours though.

That last one was definitely dead... I opened it up to get an idea of WHAT happened?! Not really sure, but I'm guessing 1 too many cold nights. It was so close in development to the hatching date. It just never absorbed the yolk, and it was starting to rot. So it must of been dead for about 3 days.

This was a darker brown egg, probably an EE cross. It was a dark grey almost black bird. She'll be buried as if she made it to hatch.

As for the last 7.... I don't hear a thing.

But I will wait...

I really know I think its time to give up rather then hold out for a miracle!

Here's my 'not so great' set up trying to get some heat to these little guys.

There is hot water in the bottom, lamp on top is what I use on my seedlings in the house for spring, and there is moist paper towels I have under the eggs in the strainer bowl. My temp is a thermometer from a fish tank. It currently says, 85. Any suggestions to get the heat up quickly?

Are you using a 150 watt red bulb. If not that will reallt make the diffrence. it can get up to 125 in about 2 min. Try that. I really want at rooster so that I can hatch my own eggs.
