Oh wow! That's cool!A relative actually has a notebook full of all of the close relatives, about 5 generations back.
Yea it is. We are trying to get it again.Oh wow! That's cool!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it’s encouraging! I feel bad when I can’t reply right away, had a super full day and my brain is fried, I will try to reply more fully tomorrowSort of like immersion! I think I am almost to the point where I can start understanding words in context, but an old play like Godot is probably far from the best thing to read for that.As for listening, I don't have a lot of words locked in my mind, and I fall behind very quickly when I am listening.
The big curly letters are like art, it's hardly even writing. As for fonts like Gothic, with the right pen and a basic knowledge it it surprisingly easy. And in Gothic, you can memorize how each of the decorative capital letters look. But still, annoying, and it makes your hand hurt, especially if you are actually using a pen with nibs.
I totally agree! When we are standing in heaven, the songs that we sing will not be about ourselves, but only about the Lord and how wonderful He is.
My church is officially non-denominational but it has strong baptist roots. We have a decent mix between songs about our sins and songs just praising God, and between hymns and contemporary, which keeps everyone happy. Some people are very set in what songs they would like to be singing. I heard of a church that split into an early morning and late morning service, and the only difference in the services was that in one service they sang hmnys, and in the other, it was contemporary. I can understand wanting to sing a certain type of worship music, but the fact that it can tear apart a church is amazing in a really sad way.
Ah, don't apologize, it's a good rant.
Okay, finally a free moment and my brain is working again! Yeah, its definitely not worth having a church split over. A local E Free church did kind of the same thing and now has a contemporary service and a service for the older people with hymns, the funny thing is that there's a man in that church that's 105 and he goes to the contemporary one. Pretty incredible either way though! I just wish we could sing songs that were more substantial and not full of nonsense. Oh well. Interesting about the Baptist roots! Around here most non denominational people come from either Lutheran or Apostolic (an anabaptist group) backgrounds, but it seems like they were so fed up with tradition that they threw out everything they grew up with, good and bad, and now it's like they are lost because they're trying to figure out how to do church but don't know what to pattern it after. I think people maybe need to look back and appreciate the traditions that were developed to keep people in faith through generations.Sort of like immersion! Yeah it's really fun! You don't really need to take the DNA test, you can still build a tree just fine without one. Ancestry is really helpful because once you get back to your great or great great grandparents, most likely distant relatives will already have put them in their trees and might have pictures, obituaries, etc. that you haven't seen. Without online trees someone like a great great grandparent might have hundreds or a 1000+ descendants but their pictures might only get passed down through a couple of their descendants and end up tucked away where hardly anyone sees them. Once the pictures are online all their descendants present and future can have access to them, pretty cool! Other sites like geni.com are really helpful too.I'd love to get on Ancestry, geneaology is so cool. Though unfortunately my father doesn't want us sending our DNA anywhere to anyone.I'll just have to be happy with my grandma pulling out old albums and digging through our history!
Whoops! How did that go over with family?DNA testing was how we found out about my half uncle.![]()
I'm three fourths German and one fourth Norwegian, and my parents are both the same! Does your family make lefse?I know I'm mainly German, with some Norwegian and Irish in the mix. I have family in Germany so I speak a tiny bit and my last name is German. Other than that, I have no clue.
Hopefully for those lost folks, they'll at least find tradition like the world finds "new" trends. Meaning it's not new, it's reaching back to good solid roots and ideas, but it might feel new.Okay, finally a free moment and my brain is working again! One thing I just don't like about some older hymns is the jenky melodies. They're very hard and not as pleasing to sing. Of course the hymns are great, it's just singing them, especially if you aren't very familiar, is sometimes a chore.I personally like a mix. I love hymns and am incredibly grateful to my parents for teaching them to me. It's saddening when I think about how many hymns my younger family members don't know because their church only sings the "popular" hymns. The church that I currently attend (not regularly though, for a heap of personal reasons) sings not only just hymns but in four parts without musical accompaniment, sometimes I miss the music but it's still pretty spectacular to be in that room![]()
Thanks for the info! I may sit down sometime in the future and dive into that. It's just so fascinating.Yeah it's really fun! Very well, actually! Everyone seemed pretty excited when they found out, once they got over the initial "wait what now?!", of course. My aunt sent her DNA in somewhere, and so had her half brother. That's how we found him.Whoops! How did that go over with family?
