All The Stereotypes Of Australia

Well, I live in Utah, which has a similar climate to some parts of Australia. In fact, Utah has a bit of everything.. alpine forests and blazing hot deserts! That's why I got Australorps for my flock. It wasn't a bad choice! Aussie poultry breeders did a good job developing them for a widely varying climate. (Here, it's zero F. in winter sometimes, and above 100 F. in summer!) When I think of Australia, I feel a kinship because I've always lived in a similar situation where urban areas are separated by wide expanses of untamed wilds, i.e. the American Great Basin and Intermountain West.

There are still some *very* small towns that still have the wood facades, but the vast majority of them are just ghost towns now. I think there's one somewhere in Nevada that still exists . . .you're more likely to find tiny towns with architecture from the Victorian era (lots of brick), but yes, there are still towns out there where the entire town is a single block long.

As for Australia, hmmm.

When I think of Australia I immediately think hot and dry. Beautiful, but sparse. A bit of further thought brings up the idea in my head (no doubt gained from Nichole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Deborah-Lee Furness, Russell Crowe, Keith Urban, etc) that all the people are beautiful. Which is silly, but there you go.

Also I have it fixed in my mind that every living thing on your continent will kill you, if given even a half a chance to do so. Except maybe koala bears. If I ever visited your country, I wouldn't be able to enjoy anything because I'd be looking for the snakes and the spiders and the vicious creepy crawly things, not to mention the jellyfish and the sharks and the crocs and the birds and the feral, now wild animals like rabbits and dingos. I have a major thing against bugs and spiders and sharks but still. I know it's illogical, but . . .

Sorry.

Socially, it's my understanding that by and large, Australians are friendly, open, welcoming folks who are industrious and not afraid to fail and try again. I've always admired y'all.

I'm probably just as wrong about the things that try to kill you as most people think about Americans.

And Vegemite almost made me puke and pass out just from smelling it.

I found that I quite like Vegemite when it's done up proper, that is marbled in with butter and spread on bread! I believe that's the way the Aussies eat it. The key is not to use too much! (And try not to think about it being the gubbins that settles in the bottom of beer brewing vats)

This is the funniest thread.

Drop bears - Aussies and Kiwis should get that one.
Koalas are more likely to do you damage in the wild than a snake. They are not friendly like they are in the zoo.
I Love vegemite.
I have lost count of the times i have been asked if i have kangaroos in my back yard and do I ride them lol. Yes i have kangaroos in my yard but unless i want to get the u know whats kicked out of me I aint going to ride one anytime soon

Edited to add- We have all these deadly snakes spiders and some not so friendly others and what scares me the most.. Grasshoppers-- Go figure.
