There are still some *very* small towns that still have the wood facades, but the vast majority of them are just ghost towns now. I think there's one somewhere in Nevada that still exists . . .you're more likely to find tiny towns with architecture from the Victorian era (lots of brick), but yes, there are still towns out there where the entire town is a single block long.
As for Australia, hmmm.
When I think of Australia I immediately think hot and dry. Beautiful, but sparse. A bit of further thought brings up the idea in my head (no doubt gained from Nichole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Deborah-Lee Furness, Russell Crowe, Keith Urban, etc) that all the people are beautiful. Which is silly, but there you go.
Also I have it fixed in my mind that every living thing on your continent will kill you, if given even a half a chance to do so. Except maybe koala bears. If I ever visited your country, I wouldn't be able to enjoy anything because I'd be looking for the snakes and the spiders and the vicious creepy crawly things, not to mention the jellyfish and the sharks and the crocs and the birds and the feral, now wild animals like rabbits and dingos. I have a major thing against bugs and spiders and sharks but still. I know it's illogical, but . . .
Sorry.
Socially, it's my understanding that by and large, Australians are friendly, open, welcoming folks who are industrious and not afraid to fail and try again. I've always admired y'all.
I'm probably just as wrong about the things that try to kill you as most people think about Americans.
And Vegemite almost made me puke and pass out just from smelling it.
