I'd say charge what people are willing to pay you. It varies so much out here I'm in the same boat; not quite sure what I should be selling them at. Cheap white eggs in the store go for .98 cents a dozen. Then you see the "organic" brown eggs, which are $3.99 a dozen. Free range brown eggs are only slightly cheaper by maybe .20 cents or so. I've yet to see any blue or green eggs in the store. Not sure what exactly they'd go for if the stores were able to get their hands on them. I'm aiming for $2.25 a dozen locally and will knock .25 cents off the price of future eggs if they bring their cartons back for their next dozen.

I sell my chicken eggs for $2 a dozen, $3 for 18. When I can, I put two duck eggs in with 10 Jumbo chicken eggs and sell it for $3 a dozen. It seems to be popular espeically for those who have never tried duck eggs before. If I were selling just duck eggs I'd charge $6 per dozen. They're hard to come by this time of year. Both my hens are broody and sitting on 32 eggs at least. I'm going to let them hatch them out and keep a fiew of the hens but butcher the rest so we have lots of fresh farm ducks we raised ourselves.

man, basic large eggs in buffalo are under a $1. i think i would be lucky to get $2.50 here. that said I have an egg farm 10mins from my house

Sell at the price the market will bear. Don't lower your price to coworkers.

We sell at $3.50/dozen and my coworkers often buy them all out.

My best advice is to go to your local organic food store (do you have a Whole Foods?) and see what organic free range eggs go for. Then price slightly lower. Here, Whole Foods sells organic free range eggs for $3.65. Thusly, we sell at $3.50. We also follow all applicable laws about packing and labeling, so we have our own cartons. We pay a 25 cent rebate on those if they're returned in reusable condition, so my regulars pay $3.25.

Edited to add--basic large eggs are under a dollar a dozen on sale here, too. Doesn't mean that people won't pay more for a superior product. Remember, your fresh eggs are a totally different product than those nasty, old store brand eggs.

I'm in Ashland County, Ohio (about 45 minutes from Bath) and everyone around here sells for $2 a dozen. But this is not a wealthy area and people won't pay more for it. People are willing to pay slightly more for the better tasting eggs, but not a significant amount more than the store eggs.

If you can get more, you may as well ask for more. If people don't like the price and won't pay it, you can always reduce price and/or look for new customers.

Since you live in CA i think you can easlily get $4 a dozen. I have heard of as high as $6 a dozen out there.

Most sell around here for $2-$3 a dozen, but I have seen them occasionally for $5 a dozen. We stopped by a local organic grocery store the other day for ACV and saw eggs for $6.39 a dozen!!!

We will probably only have enough eggs for ourselves and family. I wouldn't feel right charging family either, so this is what we came up with. We plan to have a "feed buying rotation" with our family. A dozen eggs a week and they will buy a 50# bag of layer feed every three months (mom one month, sis the next, bro the next, and repeat). It works out to just slightly less than $1 a dozen, but we won't be putting out any more of our money for feed.

Always charge what you think the market will bear. Will people pay $4? The only way to find out is to try! As many other posters have mentioned, if they don't want to pay that much, you can then reduce the price.

My father is a muscician, and he never charged enough. One day, he decided to quote someone a price MUCH higher than he ever did before.
He cringed when he told her the price over the phone, but the client didn't even bat an eyelash, just said "that's fine" and went on with the conversation. Let your mom sell them for what she can get!
