PulletNewbie, I'm glad she did too! She is "off-limits" as far as selling or other nefarious purposes, because I respect her courage and role as the trouble-maker (like taunting the neighbor dog...)
My quail did great in our setup and didn't seem like lemmings, but they were rather sheltered. I homed them with my mom for a while when we were moving and she even got them used to taking baths in her tub. As far as breeding and releasing, as far as my understanding goes, most domestic quail are absolutely worthless at setting on a nest and raising chicks. It's been "bred out" of them and you'd need to incubate, and I'd be wary about releasing incubated human-raised chicks into the wild. Caging/breeding/releasing chicks from wild stock, though? I'm not sure.

I raised my quail mainly indoors and provided "foraged" snacks when I couldn't supervise them to run, so I'd probably not be a great resource on how to raise quail in your environment outdoors. They do take up far less room than chickens/ducks, though, and I imagine it would be sufficient to use some of the same predator-proofing techniques as with chickens, and scale it down to size if you're doing a small enclosure for them. Also, their egg-song is absolutely adorable!

HeritageGoose13, I'll probably do so at some point. I'd like a little more hands-on experience with creating fully self-sufficient systems first, but we'll see :)
