    Hello everyone!
I am preparing to ready my backyard for the purchase of 3-5 silkie hens this spring. Due to city regulations in Winston-Salem, NC I am limited to the the amount of chickens and only hens. Does anyone have recommendations for personal successful DIY pojects relating to auto feeders/waterers and heat source ideas for inside the coop. I am also looking for a reputable breeder in the area that would have 3-4 silkie hens available (no preferred color). Thank you in advance for the help and glad to be a part of this great website.

Hi and welcome to BYC and good luck with finding your silkies.I understand that they are little more difficult than other chickens to sex at an early age so do bear that in mind when choosing your flock (since roos are a no-no).

    All the best

Silkies are extremely difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. of age and sometimes not till they crow or lay eggs. Since you can only have females, I would advise you to either buy laying hens or pullets at point of lay. I don't know if hatcheries or feed stores sell them at that age. They would be more costly than chicks but, you wouldn't have to worry about rehoming males.
