Hi,
I do keep a light on in the coop for heat, they are not outside much, due to Wi. weather. When do you think I should expect some eggs? The are ee, orphingtons and barred rocks.
Thanks
Amy
Some birds mature slower than others and some breeds seem to be less like like to start laying in the winter months. I've know quite a few people with EEs that don't start laying until spring. The signs they are close to laying are bright red combs, and squating when you reach down to touch them. I like this chart because it gives you an idea about when to expect your hens to begin laying. Five months and not laying is not unusual, 25 weeks is considered sort of an average.
Our EE's laid their first at 26 weeks (about a week ago) - and only 2 of the 20 are laying...the good news is, when I posted my first "What is wrong, where are the eggs" post - they laid THAT DAY! Hopefully you'll have a surprise this evening!
