Glad to meet you, Bo. Callender Girl has a good point. I wouldn't be able to tell you a thing about lava rock from up here in Massachusetts, where it's a mish mash of glacial till and granite. No lava rock. But you can link up with other members who live in Hawaii by using the State/local thread.

Aloha! I have friends in Hawi and Honakaa with Chickens. I know their chickens free range and the coop floor is pretty much a good ole Hawaiian natural mix of lava, sand and soil. One friend also has a large flock of wild Seabrights (close to Waipio,) they run around mostly on soil, grass but if you think about all of the wild chickens on the beaches, they do pretty good in rough black sand and tree litter. I can hook you up with my friends for advice. I'll be over there from mainland in a few months
Planning to live full time in a few years and for sure have Chickens! Then I'll be learning from you!
