Greetings AudieH, Welcome to BYC! :frow

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
1/2" hardware cloth very securely stapled over all openings, tightly secured doors and maybe hot wires and you will not have losses to a mongoose. Good luck with your new flock and fledgling businesses.

DobieLover, Just saw your avatar pic of your Dobberman! We sadly just lost our Dobbie Baby "Sarge" a few months ago to bone cancer. We rescued him 8 years ago from my husbands workplace when they upgraded their security system. My husband felt bad that he was kenneled in a large outdoor enclosure most of the day and only let out at night after they closed so he didn't get much time with anyone. My husband would go out and get him everyday so he could lay by his desk and get lots of scratches and pets :) . He was 12 years old when he passed and he left a huge hole in our hearts. I miss him everyday.

The two in my avatar, Bridget and Dylan, I lost many years ago. I've had 5 so far. All rescues. My current boy is an 87# blue I named Ben. He's a handful! I will always have at least one Doberman!

Chicken Coops.

What exactly did you Google to get here? <<<<<<<<<<<

BYC has an APP!

Texas KiKi, I googled "how to keep mongoose out of chicken coop or nesting box". We free range our chickens most of the day, so what I was really looking for was how high can a mongoose jump, so I would know how high to build my nest boxes without having to use a ramp for the hens to get in, but that search did me no good and I could not find an answer to how high they can jump. By observing them it is not all that high and we have been able to get them to move further away over the last few days with the changes we have already made, but I am sure they will be back. We have not suffered any loses with our adults, but they just started laying a few weeks ago and the mongooses have become interested in the coop for the eggs. Because we free range and the nesting boxes are currently built into the coop, we have to leave the door open during the day. We want to stop this and have separate nesting boxes so I can close up the coop but still free range. Anyway, the search lead me here which gave me great ideas to predator proof my coop but again that does me no good if I leave the door open LOL. I am excited to get our poultry net soon, I think I will feel better knowing I at least have that to protect my girls, (along with my awesome rooster who does a great job).

Welcome to BYC :frow When I lived in South Africa we had a big problem with mongoose. They love chicks, young birds and eggs. When those are not available, they will go for fully grown birds. Keeping dogs with your flock will deter them to some extend, but sadly the best solution we found was trapping them and killing them.
