Alot of Duck questions

Also, on a broader note to the whole thread, I am falling in love with my Cayugas. (the wife has chickens, I have 10 little slobs) We have 4 Cayugas, (2 hens, 2 drakes) and a pair of Welsh Halry Hens... and the 4 we got this morning from a friend, who's friend's friend is a school teacher and found out they were the wrong type (supposed to get mallards and ordered pekins or something to that effect. Long story, still don't have all of it). I am going to post some pictures in a please help me ID them thread and see what I can get.

Sorry, I was wrong about the lack of protein. You are right in that it is because of too much Pr. Nevertheless, I had a duck with angle-wing at about 2 months old and it actually corrected it self. I didn't reduce the amount of protein but you're right in that case. I'm not sure about the genetic thing but it's only a concern if you are breeding them. The chances of having angle-wing are very small. I'm sorry also about your choice of ending his life or not. It is your business and I have no right telling you different. I'm just a hopeless animal lover and would do anything for my animals to keep them alive. Putting one down is only if the animal was suffering. I spent $ 1.000 on surgery for my Pekin who had an infection in her leg. The neighbors thought I was crazy but the University of Kansas Vet School had a experience they would never forget. My darn Pekin became a celebrity around Campus....Well, goodluck !!

Well, we are raising them as both egg and meat ducks. As to Angel Wing, my research is that it is caused by too much protein, not too little, and that it is a genetically passed trait, so I do want to remove that from the gene pool if it is, but I will do more research. He is also the more aggressive of the two drakes though and that is another point not in his favor. Nameless, our other drake is lovey as heck. Still and all, Yes, I do know about the taping and such, but I will definitely double check the genetic pass information I got. Need to find out a final on that before I say too much here and sound like a total 'tard.

Still, I am raising egg and dinner duck, so I am not greatly concerned. Thanks for the info boost though, and I will definitely look up the info and get back on this thread with what I find. I will also grab the links so you can visit the same sites and we can all be on the same page. I find that helps immensely.

Thanks for all the help,
D.

No problems at all... and for a prize show bird I would like as not go out of my way like that. The experience you helped them get at the college is awesome. We are indeed going to be breeding, but they have to be a little older than the juveniles they are now before we can do anything big. We are hoping to have it set up to have hatching eggs for sale next spring. I love my ducks and the wife's chickens to death, they are certainly a comical bunch. But yeah, we are raising for multi-purpose. I got the job of the butcher cause the wife names them all and can't, and well, we have tons of them for breeding and we are going for clean bloodlines. I know the rarity of the angelwing, and now, of course, that I mentioned it, I can't find the site that was professing that angelwing is genetic. I will keep looking and I will make sure to get some good data sites to link up here so we all have access to them for our records. It is indeed a little bit of a concern among duck growers for sure, and I think we should all be able to access the info! Thanks for the thoughts, and grats on the Pekin. She must be a helluva bird!

Cool, I house all my fowl together as well. They get along fine. The chickens have their Aplha-and the ducks do as well...I only keep the Drakes seperate because all they want to do is mate. I have 4 drakes together, 5 hens and 3 small drakes with the chickens....works out well.
