I have a ton of questions about quail...can anybody help me out?

Okay, all of these questions are about Cournix Quail .

1. How freindly are they?
2. Are the males louder than the females (like do they crow?)
3. Do you need a male to have eggs?
4. How big are the eggs?
5. How often do they lay?
6. How many eggs make up one chicken egg?
7. How much room for about two birds?
8. They're pretty common as indoor birds, right?
9. Do they smell?
10. Are they noisy?
11. What do they eat?
12. Are pine shavings poisonous to them? What's a good bedding choice?
13. What is an ideal cage for a quail? Like, what should it have in it?
14. do they tolerate cold well?
15. do they go broody?

I'm still new to them, but from what I've read/experienced so far...



1. How freindly are they?

mine are surprisingly calm, but I wouldn't call them friendly either. Not something you can play with imo

2. Are the males louder than the females (like do they crow?)

yes, but it doesn't bug me. It's a quiet crow in my opinion, nothing like a rooster/guinea

3. Do you need a male to have eggs?

no, only for fertile eggs if you want to hatch them

4. How big are the eggs?

1/4ish the size of a chicken egg (a lil more than an inch thick I believe)

5. How often do they lay?

usually an egg a day (depending on many factors, weather, light, age etc)

6. How many eggs make up one chicken egg?

4-5

7. How much room for about two birds?

1 square foot per bird (average). in my cages that seems to be quite a bit of overkill, but I'm sticking with it to try to keep them comfortable

8. They're pretty common as indoor birds, right?

not sure

9. Do they smell?

it took leaving 8 of them in a small shop for over a week with no cleaning before I could even detect a scent out of them, but I've read stories saying otherwise as well

10. Are they noisy?

to me they sound like typical outdoor ambient noise, almost like crickets chirping

11. What do they eat?

GBS (game bird starter) seems to be the common way to go, mealworms crickets etc as snacks

12. Are pine shavings poisonous to them? What's a good bedding choice?

the only bedding I've ever heard to be poisonous is cedar I think (for any animal that I've had), but I cant swear to that
[edit] a quick google search turned up lots of results advising against pine and cedar in general for other animals, so maybe its best to avoid them both.

mine are in wire bottom cages with no bedding but we put hay/straw down occasionally

13. What is an ideal cage for a quail? Like, what should it have in it?

food, water, something to put sand in if you want them to be extra happy and play in it (plus it really is funny to watch)

14. do they tolerate cold well?

very well from what I've read

15. do they go broody?

hardly ever

4. How big are the eggs? Not that big, BUT they are really good pickled and sunny side up.... Or scrambled

5. How often do they lay? One egg a day for the rest of their lives, manybe only 300 a year actually though

6. How many eggs make up one chicken egg? 4 quail eggs = 1 large chicken egg
7. How much room for about two birds? Well if you are thinking of getting a pair, you will need 1 male to 3 females minium. 1 male to 6 females max.

12. Are pine shavings poisonous to them? What's a good bedding choice? Pine shaving are the BEST choice, Cedar is poisonous to them.
13. What is an ideal cage for a quail? Like, what should it have in it? You should have quail in a quail cage

, The cages need 1/2 inch hardware cloth, anything bigger they will pretty much get their heads stuck in or walk right through, and wire smaller than that the poop cant fall through.

14. do they tolerate cold well? Just cover the pen with a tarp and they should be fine, pennsylvania has COLD weather down in the teens and I havent put my tarp on yet and they are fine....
15. do they go broody? They rarely go broody, And I mean RARELY
