Alternatives to heat lamps?

Happy Chicken Mama, I love that pic of your nice fat and fluffy hens in your guest room! I looked all four times!

The other end of the equation is to make maximal use of what heat you *do* have (be it from electrical heating, from a sunny window, from a solar heater, from the chickens' own body heat, from the daily high temperature, whatever, all of it).

So it is worth thinking what you can do to maximize daytime heat gain and storage, and insulate your coop well (including the roof) (and in snowy climates, remember snow is quite a good insulator if piled against strong coop walls!).

We're going to grab Tribble, our banty cochin, and see what she thinks of having babies snuggle under her.

Doesn't she look like the perfect brooder?

*lol* I'm afraid I hatch more chicks than my mama hens could handle. They also have this attitude that they'll set when they want instead of when I want

I'm going to look into the flexwatt heat tape idea. How do you guys actually set such a system up?? Is the tape under the brooder, or in direct contact with the shavings?
