Am I a bad person?

i'm doing this partly because i don't want the hens stepped on by the hulking roos and partly because i don't want them mating before i can stop it in the morn.

I do apologize that I haven't read all 304,000 posts, so I have no idea what you are talking about. If you had a fire, I am very sorry. I was simply pointing out the only way a rooster would mate is if he has light...otherwise, they sleep at night. Sorry for any confusion.

I care because when i lock them up at night, the hens are fine. When I open the door in the morn. the hens combs are slightly bloodied. this has not happened since i started putting the roos in time-out.

Bawk, How many roos vs hens do you have? I had a bachelor pen at one point when I felt my ratio was off. Not sure if that would be possible for you. I live on a farm where I have access to other buildings, and am able to divide them up as I choose. If that isnt the case for you I would remedy the numbers problem. My bachelor roos got along quite well when they were alone. It is only when women are introduced that the fellas get all wonkylike.....
