I got some chicks at the feed store and they told us this one was a plymouth barred rock, we went back about a week later and the other barred rocks have white speckles on their little wing feathers...our little one doesn't though, he has all black feathers besides for one all white feather on the bottom of one wing, do we possibly have a late bloomer or a is he a little black sex link

I'm extremely new, I just actually rescued 4 chicks, and I 2 that look very similar to your chick. One is solid black with the one white spot on the wing, but even her beck is black. I was told that it was a sex link. And then I have one that is solid black with the spots like a barred rock, but has the same head white spot as yours, and also the lite beck, and I was told that it was most likely a roo due to the white spot on the head, and was either a barred rock or a sex link. Not sure if that really helps.

Here are my 2 rescued babies. I was told they are around 3-4 weeks now, so they are starting to look funny. :D

It looks like a cuckoo Marans to me (Rocks have yellow skin, Marans have white). The head dot means it will be barred or cuckoo and white wing tips are common on hatchery birds. Dark wings are a positive sign if you're hoping for a pullet.

I think it will be near impossible to tell until the bird is old enough to tell gender based on secondary sex characteristics. I was in the same predicament last year and was praying for it to be a Barred Rock pullet but it was obviously not when he started getting red comb and wattles. Oh well. If it is a Barred Rock the barring will be clean and even looking but if its a BSL boy then the barring will be sloppy/discolored and mine has a few red feathers here and there on him.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you, maybe your lucks better than mine ;)

That chick looks just like my plymouth barred rock! One white feather underneath and no discernible bars yet. I'm convinced she is a barred rock, but not convinced she is a she... Here's Stripes:

well it sounds like I'll just have to wait and see

oh well I'll be happy no matter if she is really a she or not and the breed doesn't really matter to me...I would love to know though

ginger g: I see that your chicks appear to be outside, I was just wondering if they are outside and if so how long have they been outside? what's the weather like there
