As long as no chooks in the coop!

It does sound like a short somewhere, though. You should have it checked because no electricity should be going through it while it's turned off.

Shocked in the chicken house?

At another home, we had an electric fence charger in the feed room of the chicken house. The wire leading out of it got up against a 110 wire and the insulation burned thru.

About 30 yards away, a big steer calf decided to jump a single wire electric fence

. I don't remember why that fence was there but that's how we discovered that there was a short somewhere in the fence. That wire burned about 6 inches up inside the steer as he lay on the ground on top of it

We shut off the fence but the steer was still fully "charged" !!! Something wrong there . . .

Shorts are bad, bad news. Better get it checked out.
