Am I being mean to my roosters?

Not mean at all. I finally had to lock my Guineas and Roosters together. They're being so mean to the hens, and such.

I'm impressed that he got the idea for even 3 days. If a rooster is in complete dark and quiet, he is unlikely to crow because he will stay asleep through the night unless disturbed. I have heard that if he can't stretch his neck he won't crow, or at least he won't crow as loud.
