Am I doing something wrong? Hatchery chicks are dying :(

I am so happy for your chicks are doing great!! Do you have pics? I need a positive boost .

With this batch I am starting to get angry with myself. Why did I buy through a hatchery? Is that the reason the chicks are weak? I am hoping to hatch my own chicks with the survivors, if any . I want to have strong, healthy outdoor chickens

That room temperature is fine. Switch them to plain water though, and it would be a smart thing to get to a farm store and get some Corid, and start them on that. Probably a combination of shipping stress and possibly over-medicated water, coccidiosis is always possible, even probably in chicks. Especially when they're able to poop in the feeder. I personally feel we go a little too heavy with the electrolyte water. Is your feed medicated? If so, adding Nutri-Drench to the water makes it less effective, possibly even ineffective.

And you're gonna wanna cut those legbands off them too, chicks grow too fast to have hard bands like that.

OK, thank you. No, no medicated food. They are on organic starter feed from my local feed store.

Then I would very strongly suggest some Corid.

I still would like to keep track of who is who. I read on here people find this the best way if you check regularly on how tight the band is. What would you recommend instead? I really can;t keep them apart

I have had good experiences with moyer, but i am only 5 hrs away by car, so it wasn't a long trip

I am west of Austin. The chicks travelling from Cleveland to New Orleans, and than the tracking info stopped. The left the hatchery Monday afternoon and I picked them up at my local PO Thursday morning. But I got them a week now, so I am hoping this will not still be why they are weak.

They still grow too fast to use zip ties, in my opinion. You can get some very skinny pipe cleaners in different colors and wrap around a couple times. Or you could get those super tiny elastic hairbands that come in different colors. Or you can get actual chick leg bands online.
