Feeding Wild Birds

Finally! I was watching my 3 resident turkey hens feeding under the bird feeders when I noticed movement further back in the brush. They arrived in a hurry - the big flock is here. As best I could count there were 31 hens and 3 jakes. The bearded hen was part of the flock - glad to see her as she is a long time visitor.

Beautiful Bald Eagle cruised over about 40 feet 'bout 12:30 today as I was carrying materials to the bee room, cocked his head, gave me look over. NICE :thumbsup
I was so excited when they first showed up here....
Juveniles keep trying to get my chickens.... I'm excited in a different way now :barnie

Only the two original turkey hens showed up today - easily identifiable as one has a visible spur on her left leg, and the other is tagged and has a tracking device. Hen 3 has apparently rejoined the big flock. They sure bulked up on feed yesterday.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

We love our bird friends here at this house. We have multiple feeders of all different types to attract as many kinds of birds as we can, I actually make suet and seed blocks myself so I can control the ingredients and tailor them to the different birds that were attracting or feeding.
Currently I'm working on building my murder of crows.... a slow day may bring me 6 to 10, but a great day brings me 20 to 30. I have several that have learned to call me out to feed them when they arrive, a few that have learned to come when called with my Crow Dinner Bell and two or three that have gotten brave enough to come down and feed just a few feet away from me when I'm out giving them food while the others remain up in the trees waiting for me to at least get to the porch but inside is better in their opinion.
We have had an extremely mild winter here this year and I've noticed it has impacted not only the number of birds that we see everyday but also the species. For example this year we did not see any varied thrush at all and in winters when we have snowfall they are frequent visitors. I think that has been my biggest disappointment this year because I love seeing them.
