With my pellets I don't like it to ever run out. Sometimes scratch is the same, sometimes just in the afternoon to get them to hang around the coop. Making them less likely to hide somewhere over night.
Mine are good at foraging for them selves. Yours made need to run out to encourage them to free range.
I've had cornish X rock that HAD to be feed a little at a time just so they would walk. If not they would gorge themselves and never leave the feeder until they were to fat to walk and soon would become crippled. (A hint if anyone has never had X-rocks and isn't ready to butcher at 6-9wks old.)
