Am I imagining it? - chickens prep for count

So every evening I walk into my coop and say good night to my ladies and count them out loud while pointing. If I can't see one I always make sure she is actually up on the roost. Lately I have noticed that when I start to count they pop their heads up and necks out and then settle back down once I am done (makes it easier for me to count them for sure!) Have I inadvertently trained them to let me see them for count or are they just watching me because they think my actions are weird? Just curious.....

Chickens are intelligent creatures so I wouldn’t put it passed them to catch on to your nightly routine.

When I had counted my chicks/chickens they always did that same thing. I think it’s just the movement of your hand that they’re looking at.

When I walk in after dark with my headlight on for lock up and head count,
they mostly all raise their heads. Reaction to being 'disturbed' is my take.
