Great hatch, congrats! Your chicks are very pretty. Nice looking flock, too.
When I first got my LG, years ago, no fan, no turner, I turned the eggs by hand every few hours, but I was working full time, 75 miles away, so there was a 12 hr stretch every day with no turning. So they got turned every 12 hours, more or less, and a couple times extra on my days off. My DH was driving truck cross-country, so he wasn't there to turn them, either. I just had the crappy thermometer that came with it, no hygrometer, just put water in the rings. I put a little blue food coloring in the water so I could see it better. I had a nearly 100% hatch rate, with my own mutt eggs.
Now, I have fan kit, an auto turner, a hygrometer, 2 other thermometers, and supposedly know what I'm doing. I just finished a hatch where I only got 8 out of 22 eggs. These were shipped eggs, but they were all but 2 looking great on day 18. So I don't think the problem was the eggs. They were beautifully packed, not an crack or chip anywhere when I got them.
I think I got better hatches when I wasn't so careful with them. I wish I had time to do a test hatch on mutt eggs right now, but I have more shipped eggs coming in a few days. There were some bad temp and humidity swings, the last 3 days.
Is your roo a Brahma? I had a bunch of those, they are wonderful birds. The roos almost always have weird crows! Such deep voices, and they sound kind of strangled at the end. Mine always had really good fertility, too. I still have some Brahma hens, and a bunch of cross-breeds. they're very nice. My light Brahma hens are terrific moms. Yay Brahma Mamas!
