am I just totally missing something about power car locks?

Dh recently got a 2000 Ford Explorer, with all electronic gizmos like locks and windows. I never have been a big fan of push-button windows, but I didn't know that the locks would be such a major PITA!
The doors lock when you put it into gear, no problem right, my dad's car does this but they also unlock when you put it back into park.

I took it to the gas station and the door unlocked when I got out. Or so I thought. It did let me get out anyway. I go in, pay my $20 and the stupid thing re-locked itself with the keys in the ignition. Fortunately I was within walking distance of home and the spare key, but I had ALMOST stopped for gas in another town on my way home where I would have been 15 miles away and DH wouldn't have had a car to come get me in! Ok, so don't leave keys in ignition because new truck thinks it's smarter than me. (I leave mine in my truck so it's a habit)
Got it.

If this truck is SOOOOO smart then how come it doesn't have automatic headlights too?? DH, being the bright man that he is, left his lights on all day. So I go out to take it to WalMart tonight and it's dead as a doornail. Great. The passenger doors and back hatch DO NOT HAVE A KEY HOLE OR ANY WAY TO OPEN THEM EXCEPT THE ELECTRIC LOCKS so what the heck are you supposed to do if your tools are in the back but the battery is DEAD DEAD DEAD??????

Oh, I also forgot to mention that his "clicker" thing broke off the key ring about 2 weeks after we got it so I always have to use the key to get in anyway, and it almost seems like the driver door lock doesn't fully turn when using the key. It's difficult to get it to turn over.

ARE there any benefits to power locks????? Coz I'm just totally NOT seeing any!!!!!!!!

I had a 92 Town Car that did that. Drove me nuts.

It ended up burning up because of the speed control switch.

Can you say Car B Q?

There is a procedure to shut off the automatic door lock when you put in gear ect. Not sure for that model. Look in the manual it will tell you how to shut it off.

The locks on my Saturn Vue go click, click, click sometimes when I'm going down a bumpy road. They keep trying to lock even though they're already locked. I love my Vue, but that drives me nuts.

We have a Ford so I'm allowed to say this... It's a F-O-R-D

Our truck works great, but the electrical is the ONLY thing that hasn't gone wrong with it yet. Ours has the little keypad on the door - we lock our keys in it all the time

I would never have anything but power locks and windows just for the convenience, but then again, ours IS a convenience and not a PITA

I love my 1992 Ford Ranger (with over 270K miles) and it has NONE of these annoying problems so you just take your jokes elsewhere!

I'm making a list "101 reasons I'm never trading this truck in" because I'm 100% sure that a newer one would drive me BONKERS!
It's DH's truck, or else I wouldda re-wired these locks (or cut the wires!) the day it locked me out! He banned me from working on it

With Ford, the older the better. Actually, their trucks are the only vehicles that get good ratings.

Trucks only in this household. We DO live in the sticks even though it's smack dab in the middle of the city.
I deliver pizza for a living in my Ranger, my co-worker drives a similar-aged Jeep Cherokee. One day she had to drive her hubby's car and I was telling her how to find an address and she says "Am I gonna wish I had my Jeep?" ...coz that's just the way roads are here.
