I glanced out the window after a pleasant 30 minutes here on BYC and was startled to see one of my Black Australorp pullets loose and standing on the pond dam about 25 feet from the window. As I ran to get my coat I remembered that hawks don't all fly south for the winter, ah, ah, and my mind raced as I wondered how many got out of the pen and would one be missing?!
I rounded the house and saw my cat on the dam. No chicken in her mouth and I quickly scanned the shrubbery for chickens as I ran to the pen. All were safely inside and all 16 counted.
I mistook my black cat for an Australorp.
