this morning i gave my 5 hens: 2 slices of 12 grain bread, a suet cage full of frozen brocc/cauliflower/carrots and a handful of summer mix bird seed.

later this evening i will throw a handful of peanuts into the run as well.

all this in addition to the feed that is always out. is this too much?

I hope not cause then I am guilty too

My flock gets some sort of treat everyday...which may be the reason that DH hates to walk to the barn with me...we get mobbed every time

Sounds like good healthy stuff, anyway.

You can keep track of how much they are eating of their commercial rations.

Easter Eggers are fairly small. Let's say that you "require" the 5 of them to eat 1 pound of feed the day before treats.

Daily weighing the feeder and determining how much they are eating is fairly easy. If they are eating 1 pound each day (at least, on average), then the treats can come out

!

It is similar to your mom telling you to "clean your plate" before dessert.

I feed mine treats every day. I try to mix it up on the greens assorted types of lettuce some herbs, yogurt every other day, rice, pasta, left over veggies, some raw some cooked, scrambled eggs, fruit whatever is on sale, No oranges. They love bananas strawberries, grapes, blueberries. I guess mine are spoiled. I know that I sure get great tasting eggs. They are not real crazy about watermelon but like the seeds. They would rather pick at the rind.

mine get a morning snack after they free range for an hour.. usually peas, rice,, soggy cat food etc.... then they get another snack after dinner time when we let them back out to free range and bring them back in for the night.. scratch and whatever leftovers we have. sometimes yogurt and cereal.. veggies. spagetti and meatballs .. don't laugh they loved it . there is always calcium, grit and feed available at all times

Mine won't eat green veggies lettuce nothing, I gave them cataloup they refused to eat it. I can only get them to eat watermellon yogurt and grapes . Yesterday I tried raisins nothing they would not touch it.

90 - 95% of their diet should consist of the nutritiously developed starter / grower / layer feed to ensure adeqate nutrition. Treats and snacks should be no more than 5 - 10% of the entire diet.
