Yesterday I let my 8 chicks who will be 4 weeks old tomorrow out into their run from the coop, where they have been for 1 week (it is heated as needed). Last night, I and my husband were truly thinking that we would have to round each one up and put it back in the coop. However, much to our amazement, they put themselves to bed. They neatly lined up on the ramp and marched into the coop all on their very own. What good girls I have.

And to make it even better they are all roosting on the roost bars!

Yes they are. With my previous flock, we had to chase them around the run, catch and put them back in the coop. Then place most of them on the roosts at night before they would do this themselves. The only difference is, that with this new flock, I built them a small roost when they were 4 days old, and we moved them from the brooder box they were in to the coop much younger than we did the first flock, which we moved from brooder to coop when they were 8 - 10 weeks old.

I am amazed at just how strong their genetic heritage and instincts are!

When I saw a chick literally two hours out of the shell snatch a gnat out of mid-air, I knew I was in teh prescence of a survivor. And people thinks that chickens are fragile!

And I'm amazed at the variety of smilies available on this site! Seriously, that is very cool. Wish we'd been that cool with our gang!
