My seeds have shipped and should arrive Monday! On the advice of friends I’m going to focus only on the seeds from this year and last, and let the kids play with everything else.

Do y’all use the heating mats to start your seeds? I could put them in the bathroom with a heat lamp. We keep the house around 65, but one of the seeds said it needed to germinate in a soil temp of 80-85.

I am no professional but I have managed to start seeds on top of my refrigerator pretty well. Would a regular old heating pad work the same as a "heating mat?"

Camp, I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I would start a compost pile now for black gold in 2019 growing season. Put all your manure, leaves,,kitchen scraps in it with some fertilizer. Water & turn it regularly. It won't be manure by next year.

Thanks Jane! I thought about looking into a composter for the campers to put stuff in and turn. For learning!

80* germination place=top of friidge. Tomatoes need light to germinate & don't push their seeds too deep or they will take forever to come up. Don't use a heat lamp

I’m also bad at composting. I’ve tried and it never works right. :/


Pine straw makes soil more acidic. Tomatoes, tators, peppers love it. I think your soil needs to be tilled up-arerated, add fertilizer & watered more. Sandy soil just drains the water faster

I started trying to make a garden plan based on the square-foot method. I’m sure this is part of my problem, but I’m so averse to traditional “rows” and really love an exciting, varied approach where I can squeeze in lots of variety in a small space. I think Bed A (left) is pretty good. I gave up on Bed B, just like in real life. This was all from memory, so I might have the spacing wrong, but I’ll fix it when the seeds come in. Each block is a square foot.

Then I want to plant a bit over at the chicken coop, some pest repellents.

Hi Chickenlady2014! Have you looked at Baker Seeds (rareseeds.com)? They have a couple of different kinds of purple pole beans, at least: Purple-podded Pole and Blauhilde Bean, which are also purple bole beans. It's a neat site, to boot.
