Ameracanas and egg color

Now I will have to go out and check my 3 EE's earlobes to see what color they are. Just when I thought it was all figured out. lol

You can't go by the earlobes as a "always" hard fact. Also, the original post is referring to Easter Eggers and not Ameraucanas. Yes, there is a difference.

For more info, see: www.ameraucana.org and/or www.eastereggers.com

The color of the egg is determined by the genetics passed from the mother and father. Most common are some form of blue, green, or dark olive but one can get a purple or pinkish tint when the blue or green shell is overlayed with some form of brown.

I have pure Wheaten & Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas that lay various shades of blue and one EE that lays a purplish egg.

Hope that helps.

God Bless,

This is very interesting. I have heard about white earlobes means white egggs and red earlobes means brown eggs, not anything else about earlobes to suggest eggs of other colors. It would be cool if some of the BYC members could post pics of their girls and the eggs they lay.

I have an Ameraucana that seems to be laying just plain old brown eggs. I have her, 2 sex-links, one light Brahma and a Blue Austrolorp. I just started getting eggs from them about 3 weeks ago, but have caught the Ameraucana in the nest so I'm pretty sure she is laying. All I get are brown eggs. The only reason I kept this particular hen was for the egg color. Would she be in the nest box if she is not laying or is it just possible for them to lay brown eggs? She was bought at a local feed store so I don't know the original source...

I have seen hens (that are not laying) hide out in the nest box to get away from the roo, IF she is laying a brown egg she would be an EE not a full blood,,, Also young cockerels will hide in the nest box, the other roo\s leave\s them alone there.
