Ameracauna, Auracauna, and EE Question....true or false?

3.If i wanted to breed a STANDARD Ameracauna do i have to breed the same hen color(strain; blue, wheaten) to the same rooster or can they be bred with each other and can still have STANDARD Ameracaunas?

According to the Ameraucana club if you would breed various colors together you will have Easter Eggers. One of the requirements is that they breed true, and by mixing colors you can't accomplish that. The colors that CAN be bred together would be blue, black, and splash.

If you want to learn about Ameraucanas check the Ameraucana breeders website, or ask Pips & Peeps, she know lots about Ameraucanas and is very active with the breed

1. They should only lay blue/minty green/blue, but in some varieties that needs work. I have not seen a bird get DQ'D based on egg color. The goal of a serious breeder is to only have blue and blueish green.

2. True.

3. True, with the exception of blue/black/splash and wheaten/blue wheaten/splash wheaten. Mixing color varieties = EE.

4. To develop an egg color you prefer you only hatch that color egg and breed with a roo from that color egg. IE, when selecting blue eggs, we only hatch the bluest eggs and only keep roosters hatched from blue eggs which perpetuates the blue egg genes carried by those particular birds.

And lastly your bird looks as if it has a yellow beak. This is indicative of yellow skin, true ameraucanas have white skin. If you check your bird's legs, I believe you find that they are green and not slate. The color also looks like a buff color with white, so not wheaten at all.

Thank you everyone and pips&peeps. I understand that now on my questions but now more questions arised and would appreciate your help. I see the standard colors in the ameracauna website and wondered if there are colors that also exist in standard ameracaunas but that have not yet been admitted to the standard but will later(also because i see the page of the breeders that breed the standards and they also include other colors not mentioned like splash)? I have heard of lavander and other sorts so i wonder is it hard to add another color to the standard? And where can i see pictures if those additional colors(if anyone might have pics it would be great to see them)?
Lastly are there any breeders you reccomend that breed specifically for the true blue eggs? Or for real nice colored standards like blue wheaten?

Thank you all soo much!

I know that there are Ameraucana breeders that would like to see Splash recognized and it should be easy to do with all of those working on Blues. Black Gold is another color that is close to being ready to try and gain admittance and yes there are several working on Lavender. I know Rose Knold is working on a Mottled Ameraucana but like Jean said there are current varieties that need much improvement such as the silvers. I think new varieties are great I would never discourage anyone from "going for it" as long as the standard is always at the front of the breeders mind ie: Skin, eye, shank color etc... I got nice blue eggs from Paul and Angela Smith's Blue Wheatens and I am sure Jeans are nice as well.

Check out both of the blue egg layers forum/web pages. Ameraucanas Breeders Club and Araucana Club of America. Both are small boards but they have lots of great information and lots of really nice people..

Both breeds listed in the Standard of Prefection of Poultry, state that they should lay blue eggs.

Splash and splash wheaten are not recognized, but are natural by products of breeding blue to blue or blue wheaten to blue wheaten.

A few colors some breeders are working on: lavender (self blue), blue silver, black gold, mottled and birchen. Really if you look at other breeds there are alot of different varieties of ameraucanas. Most other breeds that have this many varieties have been around for about 100 years.

The people who have the best wheatens and blue wheatens are Paul Smith and Barbara Campbell.

jean is there a place (website) that shows pictures of those future standard colors. I would love to see them. Also do you know if paul smith and barbara campbell have any chicks for sale? Does they sell fertile eggs or just day old chicks?
I would appreciate any more breeder suggestiond too
Thanks again

The club website has a pdf file that lists all the members and what they breed/sell. It is current through November, I believe.
