Ameracaunas Eggs

I am planning on getting Ameracaunas (sp) this spring, but someone told me that I should stay away from them because they don't lay well and lay tiny eggs. He said their eggs are mostly yolk or no yolk at all. Is that true?? Just wanted to know...

Mine laid all winter long and laid eggs bigger than anything I ever had on a consistent basis. Mine were pure bred and not an EE and am sure it is not the case with every bird but this is my experience.

mine lay good sized eggs, every now an then someone lays one that looks like a hand grenade. they lay every two days, they are not production layers. the eggs do seem to have more yolk than egg white but they are just fine for just about everyting if you want some get some they are lots of fun

My Ameraucanas (as well as my EEs) lay very consistently. The eggs would be considered large to extra large, generally, with the larger ones laid by the older girls. When the eggs are lined up on a towel on the counter, no matter how many brown eggs are there, there are always at least four or five blue/green-blue/green ones. I have four true Ameraucanas and three EEs.

My Ameraucana/EE lay very well and other than egg shell color, I can't tell any difference in the eggs. Relative to the size of the bird though, the eggs are pretty large.

I am planning on selling the eggs with my browns hoping it would be a novelty, but this person said people wouldn't buy them cause they want their money's worth. I am so glad that isn't true!

And we're glad you asked. Even for me, my Ameraucanas have bigger eggs than my Wyandottes. Which I think is a little strange.

My Wyandottes lay tiny eggs - They giggle terribly in the cartons!

My EE's from Privett are all over the board. Out of 6 pullet run, one was a roo. But he gets to stay because he's so nice. Of the 5 girls, one chick was all yellow and turned out to be a white hen that lays green eggs. The other 4 girls were chipmunks as chicks and turned out to be the usual golden and black laced hens. They range in size from completely HUGE (Buffy, the Vampire Slayer) to pretty small (Tiny, as we call her). Buffy lays hand grenade eggs, often 2-3 yolks, but her eggs do not hatch well. Tiny lays, well, small eggs. The others are large eggs. However, our winters are not terribly severe, a few nights below zero, kinda wet but 30-40 degree days. I stopped getting eggs completely some time in Dec, they had not been laying well since the beginning of Nov. They resumed laying around the middle of January and by March 1st they are all laying. I lost one of the girls from a prolapse in March, so from 4 remaining green eggers I usually get 3 eggs per day.
