So about two months ago we hatched out 2/3 eggs under a hen. Before I started BYC, I learned that you could tell if it was male or female the day it was born, by looking to see if it has feather sprouts. Both had them, but I have noticed that Peaches (Ameraucana) has some pointed feathers on her tail and is kinda taking charge. The feathers around her neck are not pointed, but her tail is a little long. I'm really worried because we aren't allowed to have roosters where we live and we don't really want one either. Are they old enough to to tell, and is it true that you can tell the day they're born? Please help!!

Maybe on some breeds, but I DOUBT it... post pics, lets see. :pop

In SOME breeds NO tail means they are boys, the opposite of what you would expect. There is no such differentiation to pointed or rounded feathers at this age... that's much closer to 12+weeks in most breeds. And it;s about the saddle feathers (hackles are harder). View my example...

Thank you! That makes me feel a little more confident. This is Peaches and Pepper. Pepper has a short stubby tail, and probably only one pointed feather, so I'm not really worried about her. The bottom one is Peaches, and her back feathers kinda look like the saddle feathers of a roo. What do you think?
