Ameraucana...could it be a roo?

my cockerel is a little older than yours but the pullets should barley have combs and the roos should have a little more comb than the hens at ten weeks i have 4 week old ameraucanas and having the hardest time sexing them its just to hard to tell that young on pea comb breeds!!!

I know, LOL! I really think it is a roo!! It is bigger then the other 2 and his comb is redder and wider! he also runs toward the battle

ya rite now my chicks combs are just starting to become distingusted and my cockerel has a lot of bumps also you could look for pointed saddle feathers but white birds are prob hard to tell but the attitude thing with ameraucanas isnt a selling point most are fairly calm and really only do anything when messing with there hens other wise not a big and tough roo kinda whimpy!!!! my New Hamp Hen just is so mean to this lil cockerel right now because he is in a mixed pen with a bunch of young birds so if he has a really pointy comb and it is bigger than the rest than you should have a trio!!! good luck if you have babies b/c they are sooo much trouble trying to sex b4 2months!!!

I've heard that too, but it's not totally accurate. Some EE pullets do have a 3-row comb, but the cockerels will have a redder, larger 3-row comb.

This is one of my pullets at almost 9 weeks (it's hard to see in the pic, but the 3 rows are very obvious when seen here at home):

This is a 20 week old pullet a few weeks before whe started laying:

thats EE's not the real deal there genetics behave differently b/c not pure!!! my EE cockerel has 4 rows and my EE pullet has one!!

If the comb is significantly redder than the other two, than maybe it's a roo, but... not because the comb is wider (EE pullets can have the wide bumpy comb also). From the photos you posted, its comb looks pink, not red - pink is a normal comb color for 10 week old pullets.

Also the size of the chick is not a deciding factor with EEs either - they are not purebred and have variations. My older pullet (second picture I posted on the previous page) was quite a bit larger and heavier than the other two EE chicks I had at that time and along with her larger, wider comb, I was convinced she was a cockerel up until she was about 15 weeks old - she now lays the olive eggs in my avatar.

As for being aggressive - pullets will chest bump with each and start things up too - that's how they establish pecking order - this chick may end up being the leader of the flock.

but mine is not an EE but a pure breeder stock ameraucana. Does that rule apply to them as well~ I keep hearing about EE's but not ameraucana's and they are different!

is it just a comb thing that that rule sometimes applies to?
The comb is much "pinker" and wider and longer~ Would i say red, no but much pinker. Several shades darker then the others~

a real ameraucana cockerel's comb until the comb starts to reddin will be wider and bumpier than the pullet the pullet will have like no comb at all because the ameraucana is a pea comb breed so there combs arent supposed to get very big the EE's can have single combs so your cockerel will just have a wider and a bumpier comb than you pullets they should barely have a comb mine is older than yours so yours will redden up mine is pushing 20 weeks he just starting really getting red and his comb hasnt really got that big you should really look for sex indicating feathers to be for sure because of the pea comb

I am sorry - I have easter eggers on the brain and didn't even get that yours are purebred ameraucanas. For your purebred ameraucanas, ignore my posts and listen to the ameraucana experts. My tips are are for the hatchery americana/araucana (easter eggers) owners. BTW - those are some pretty very birds you have.

My silkie hens will sometimes pick fights with the roosters and the roosters are SCARED of them!
