Ameraucana Projects Thread

400

Okay, not so unusal I get thast color all the time in my Easter Eggers. All it is, is a splash colored Blue/Red, as they mature they usually get a bluish look to the white.
Guess I need to start selling my eggs for higher prices.

Can someone tell me about the specifics of the breed standard for the Pea Comb in Ameraucanas? I just heard something about the cockerels have 3 rows of nubbins and hens having 2 or 1 row on the pea comb... Anybody able to attest to this?

Both sexes should have 3 rows. It can be very hard to see on pullets. Most of the posts you will see about this are about people trying to sex chicks. The cockerels combs mature a little faster and you can see the 3 rows where pullet chicks can be hard to see rows at all.

This has come up before and I have seen the auctions myself. Having looked over the pictures and seen it also stated as a possible red pyle project. My opinion is it is based on wheaten with dominate white and enhanced red or mahogany added. All the roosters do not have the spotted breast. A long way to go as a project. Most likely it will not make it into the standard. I could be wrong but that is my opinion only.

Does anyone here have silkied Ameraucanas?

Saw it mentioned either in here or another thread. That would be so cool. I just might take on that project in spring

Here's some project thread links for the curious:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/98335/whats-wrong-with-their-feathers (original project page, long)
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/827543/silkied-ameraucana-project (new project page with better name, the active thread)

Most of us on that thread have been quiet lately but it should start picking back up in the spring when laying resumes.

Where do you guys draw the line between "Easter eggers" & "Ameraucana projects"

Just curious

Good question but no easy answers. Projects have a goal a new color for the breed and often a proven breeder. Easter eggers have no established colors or standard. Some projects are called Easter eggers at first to avoid arguments. Even longtime friends sometimes do not agree on projects. calling them EE until they catch on avoids some of this. Some may never have a large following. You need a color that is recognized and yes new color combos due show up and have to be named. I have thought up color combos that have no name yet and decided not to seriously pursue these. I also have a project that
has some controversy that I call EE until proven.
Take the chestnuts and snow project mentioned. Had the breeder went for a wheaten based red pyle that is a known color. Adding enhanced red and trying for the spotted breast plus giving it a new name puts it in new or unknown territory. It is not known if the color will stabilize to the spotted breast pattern. It may but only time will tell. Will it catch on ? Can the ABA and the APA be convinced to accept the colors name? These points make me say it is unlikely to make it.
The lavender color is having trouble as it is already called self blue in other breeds. That is one reason the club has not tried for recognition yet. I hope this helps.

there is another add on there now. They will have to get that green out of the legs as well.
