Disclaimer first.... I have paint silkies

What is the draw of paint birds? They don't breed true, probably worse than blues..... I seldom get paint chicks from a paint roo x black. That is the best way to breed them. I don't find them pretty in smooth feathers. I get PAINT birds all the time from my SBEL crosses (WL x Lavender Am). Personally I prefer mottled over paint in smooth feathered birds.

I could make them easy enough but never really wanted to breed them.... should I?

I don't find them all that attractive in smooth feathers either . I get them as a byproduct . Not sure if they would have much of a following but then you never know .

I'm not sure why, but splash, mottled, and paint are all different forms of that black/white look and all appealing. Even just a little black on a white bird

Now if you could make pinto.

My SBELs turned out to be blue paints

My Leghorn must have carried a double copy of blue dilution.

I love paints. I like light colored birds, but think just white is too plain. So, paints and splashes are best of both worlds!

My Barred EE/"Ameraucana" chicks are feathered out now. I ended up with 2 barred pullets and 1 pure black pullet that I kept, no cockerels which is ok because I plan on breeding an AB cockerel to the resulting pullets.



The barring comes from a commercial White Leghorn (distantly) so it isn't very clean but will be interesting to see how they look as adults. They were 2 months old in this picture.

Here is a picture of an EE pullet who inherited the barring from the same stock so as adults they likely will look very similar but more of the Ameraucana body type and beard of course.

I am looking for a REAL Ameraucana pullet in Texas, preferably in the Houston area or up to a couple of hours away. I really love the blues, lavenders and splashes but am open to other colors as well. I really love all the pictures of your beautiful project birds and would love to have one as long as it will lay a blue egg. I tried to find one last year and bought a frizzled EE who ended up laying a brown egg. I have a very gentle breed mixed flock of four and am only looking for one bird. I can't believe how hard it has been to find one! If anyone has a single pullet or knows where I can get one, please pm me. I am willing to pay generously for the right bird.

We have a backyard flock of Ameraucanas, easter eggers, RIRs, and Marans. I'm getting some of these GORGEOUS blue partridge brahmas to add to our flock:


What will happen if I cross those hens with my blue wheaten ameraucana rooster?


Can this be a future project? or am I going nowhere? Lol We absolutely ADORE ameraucanas... but I am loving the colors and pattern of the blue partridge.

The double laced feather pattern I find to be absolutely beautiful. I didn't know the Patridge Brahma was also a double laced bird! I don't know that I would have the patience for selecting for such a color but then again it's also hard to breed red/brown leakage out of a pure black bird once introduced as well and I am trying to do just that!

Thank you for your reply! Honestly, I am learning as I go... We've always just kept a mixed flock and sold EEs. I don't know much about genetics, even after playing around with the chicken calculator... gives me a headache!

LOL Its probably going to be a "just watch and see what happens" project.

It will take several generations to get that pattern and remove the wheaten genes. That is going to be an uphill fight. Then you would have egg color issues and feathered legs and then there is the yellow skin vs white skin..... That cross would be a hard one to get over to the Ams side. I would pick something with fewer issues. If I was going to do it I would start with black ams not wheaten. There are other breeds that are Blue partridge. I have Blue partridge rocks I created from crossing blue rocks and partridge rocks. Took a long time to get that pattern back. Luckily I didn't have other issues to worry about.
