Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

That is unacceptable. I have never seen a lic judge place an EE at a non fair show. I doubt that Terry Reeder would do that since he is an Araucana breeder breeder and has been down this road too. I'm glad that I wasn't there. It is done at the request of the management at fairs. Fairs usually are not APA/ABA shows, so they can go by their own rules.

pips&peeps :

I would love to see the APA and ABA judges try to educate when judging a 4-H show. Go ahead and place the birds based on condition and closest to real ameraucana type, but inform the kids that the bird is in fact an ee. No harm, no foul and the kid(s) will learn very quickly what a true ameraucana is. If it is an open show, there should be no excuses.

Many people on here know that this is not a money maker for me, this is what I do. I have no problems giving chicks to 4-H groups and have offered birds to our local groups. I would gladly take kids in that are interested in the breed and help them out. I know alot of the members of the ABC would do the same. We are passionate about the "real thing", but that's just who we are. Why do something half heartedly????

The judge that did the 4H portion of our fair did an amazing job educating the kids. He had a huge group of 4Hers following him around and he took his time to explain each bird to the group and what he was seeing. The kids with hatchery birds entered had their birds judged on condition and had "commercial" written on the cage cards along with their placing. This particular gentleman is always volunteering his time and efforts with 4H and I would expect nothing less from him.

Amen, Jean!!!!

I am 100% with you - but - as long as so many hatcheries are selling birds that lay blue/green eggs with a beard and muffs as "Ameraucanas" - no matter how we spell it (mine were spelled correctly) it seems to me - we still have a HUGE problem. (Absolutely NO offense intended here but I think there are a lot of judges that don't understand the difference.)

Great idea. On Jr birds if I have to place them I don't give them a first and I write color/breed type or whatever is appropriate. APA/ABA lic judges are people just like you and I and each judge is going to do whatever they feel is right for the show. If it is an APA/ABA show there are rules that would take care of this. We cannot place birds with DQ's. Any judge that places a DQ bird in an APA/ABA show is open to all kinds of disciplinary actions.

Breed club members should also do some judge education. I always appreciate input from breeders.

So........ let's start another topic on ameraucanas.

I am going to start brainstorming to put together a couple gift baskets for the winners at Nationals. Anyone have any ideas except for goodies??? Remember, these have to make a journey in a car for a couple days from WA to IN.

(If it's edible, it might not make it...

Thanks,

These hatcheries are not just selling AM's. Hatcheries are a huge problem to exhibition poultry and education in a humane way is the only way to keep those birds down on the farm. You as breeders can do the most good, but just talking about it won't cut it. Talk to judges, fair management, show sups etc.

How does it go..."The Lord will help those that help themselves". If it is important to you, don't count on other people to do it.

Seriously though, notecards that have pictures/drawing of correct birds would be welcomed by most anyone. Discount coupon/gift certificate for eggs/chick shipment would be nice since bringing eggs to the show or taking them home may be difficult for some that may be flying or have long distances to drive. An apron that has pockets (that is not necessarily gender specific-think of the narrow "nail belt" that carpenters wear) would be great for all poultry keepers who need to have things handy or a place to store a found egg until a carton can be found. Treats for the birds, like mealworms or suet/flock cakes, may stand a chance of surviving the drive!

Since I just received a PM I need to add one more thing to the EE problem discussion. No, I don't think the three bantam AM's have the correct color, but I don't think they would be DQ'd in a show for type or color. I would love to see five blue wheaten females posted with the same ground color on each....even if they don't have blue in the tail or wings. But I would I need to see something that makes them different from Wheaten...some blue somewhere. It would make my day.

What would you suggest be done if obvious EEs are placed at an upcoming APA/ABA show. What would be the best way to document and report this.
